1/22/20 Happy New Year!! We have some new friends joining our Target family. I am excited to see the kiddos again and ready for a new unit. We will be doing TWO units this semester. First: Service Learning/Story Telling Project We will be going to a local nursing home and interviewing the residents. The students will then take that information and tell their residents story. They will write the story, illustrate, and then publish to give back to the resident at the home. We will be spending time with these wonderful individuals and I am hoping they can teach us about the past and we can bring a little joy into their lives. Through this unit we will also be learning how to tell a story. The students will publish their own story within a class book. I am looking forward to hearing about each and every one of them . Second: Stock Market Game We will be learning about the Stock Market and the kids will be playing a game against others students in the state. They will be given $100,000 of virtual cash to play the Stock Market.
Students in teams of 3-5 •$100,000 to invest for 10 weeks •Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds •Real companies – real prices – real market fluctuations •National and state rules •Winners based on highest portfolio value I am excited to see how the students do working together and I hope they enjoy the ups/downs of the Stock Market.
If you have any questions, please email me or message me on Class Dojo. I am excited about this new semester!!!! Thanks Mrs. K :)
10/3/19 Great day today! We started the day with a review of Lesson 17-18 with Hands on Equations. There is an assessment over these two lessons NEXT week (10/10/19). When then began to construct our toothpick bridges. The kiddos are working in collaborating groups. They have been given only a certain amount of money to spend of supplies and they have certain building codes they must follow. These bridges will take them several weeks to complete. We also talked about DREAMING BIG even if the risk can seem too high. The kiddos are to do a self-reflection on what is their BIG dream. What will it take for them to obtain this dream? Will the risk be a factor that would stop them or will the risk be worth it-- if they can have this dream? We continued to read from Bridge to Terabithia: Chapter 5 and 6. The kids responded in their BrainJournals about the gifts the two main characters purchased for each other for Christmas. They were to write about what the gifts were and if they were a good gift for the individual. They were asked to give examples (EVIDENCE) to support their thinking. Homework: * Do 3 more vocabulary words * Dreaming Big Reflection * Finish WebQuest if you have not already done so
Reminder: Field Trip is 11/21/19--Please send in permission slip and payment as soon as you can.
Have a great week and see you next thursday Mrs. K :)
9/19/19 Great day in Target today! The kids worked really hard. We started our day talking about EXTREME DREAMS. We watched a video about the swimmer, Dianna Nyad. She attempted to swim from Cuba to Florida. At first she did not succeed but her message was clear--NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR DREAMS. She spoke about how the journey to achieving a dream is worth the time and effort. Thankfully she did succeed and swam 111 miles from Cuba to Florida. What an amazing story!!! We continued our Hands on Equation lessons. We did lesson 19 and continued to learn how to manipulate the pieces showing how positive and negative numbers work in an algebraic equation. Next, we read chapter 4 from Bridge to Terabithia. The students then answered a response question: Do you think it would be difficult to have to change schools? Do you believe that people would make fun of you because of the clothes you are wearing like they did to Leslie? The students did a great job reflecting. We do want to work on giving EVIDENCE to support our thinking. This is something we will be working on the whole year. Finally to wrap up our day, the kiddos began to plan their bridge. They drew the side view, end view, and top view. They also started to figure out the supplies they will need to begin building after the break. Thank you for all the wood glue!!!
There is NO homework and I hope everyone has an amazing break!!!
Thanks Mrs. K :)
9/5/19 Dear Target Families, Today we continued our discussion about "Future Me." We discussed mission statements and how they can help us identify who we want to be. A personal mission statement can help us realize our personal dreams and goals. It can enrich our futures and increase the impact we have on the world around us. The kids will be working on their very own personal mission statement. I am excited to hear their ideas. We continue on to Lesson 18 with Hands on Equations. The kids are starting to see how positive and negative numbers work together use simple algebraic equations. With the Unit Study today, we continued to research bridges through a Web Quest. The kids also got with their groups today and created a company name, company slogan, and company logo. They also determined what their expectations were for each other while working collaborating with one another. We then discussed how they will be given a specific amount of money to buy supplies needs to build their toothpick bridge. With that knowledge, they also learned that they will be expected to maintain a checking account. We went over how to write checks and how to keep a check register. They have a checking activity to do for homework to show what they walked away with today. Have a great night and weekend!! See you next week!
Thanks Mrs. K
Homework: -Personal Mission Statement -Checking Activity -Bring in Wood Glue
8/29/19 Dear Target Families- Today we began to discuss "Future Me" during our Affective lesson. We watched a video of a mans 80th Birthday party. The kiddos brainstormed the character traits they hoped people would say about them on their 80th birthday. They began to think about different character strengths and virtues that they recognize in themselves now and reflected on the traits they would like to develop. Next week we will begin to write a mission statement for our lives. We also reviewed lesson 16 and began lesson 17 with Hands on Equations. We are starting the last level. They will be using all of the manipulatives now. FUN TIMES!!! During our Bridge Unit, we read chapter 3 from Bridge to Terabithia and answered a response question. We are working on explaining our thinking with evidence. They need to be able to justify their opinions with EVIDENCE. We also built past bridges. The students were given 12 pieces of angel hair pasta, 1/2 inch piece of clay, and two blocks to build a 16 inch long bridge. The bridge needed to be sturdy enough to hold the weight of marbles and a cup. We had one group build a bridge that help 16 marbles. They did an amazing job communicating and working as a team. We watched a video to help use further our overall understanding of bridges. Next week we will begin the process to building our toothpick bridge. Please send in wood glue--we will need A LOT!! Great week and I am looking forward to seeing the kids creations as we move forward.
We have a field trip coming up--forms were sent home today. Homework: -3 vocabulary words in the Ultimate Connections Vocab Book -Logic Puzzle
Have a great week and see you all soon!! Thanks Mrs. K
8/22/19 Dear Target Families- Day Two is in the books!! The kids did a great job today. We started talking about Seizing the Day today!! We discussed goals and how our actions today can affect us in the future. The kids listened to a song and analyzed the verses to start thinking about what it means to have goals in ones life. We reviewed Hands on Equations as well. We did Lesson 16 as a review. They will need to finish it for homework. We will begin Level III of HOE and I want to make sure they remember all they have done up to this point. The unit study is coming along. We continued the WebQuest they started last week. We also did several hands on activities for them to begin seeing what type of Pier they should use when they build their bridge and we discussed tension and compression. We ran out of time to build our Human Bridge today but looking forward to building it next week. They are coming together as a group. They did a great job collaborating with different groups today. I loved listening to their communication with one another. Everyone is trying new things and not putting others down for have different thoughts.
Hope everyone has a great week and see you next Thursday!!
Thanks Mrs. K

Dear Target Families- Great First Day!!! I am so happy to be back with these kiddos!! I loved hearing all about their summer trips and adventures. Sounds like everyone was very busy! I can't believe how much they have grown in just a few months. Fifth grade is a big year and we had a long discussion this morning about being organized and giving our best effort with each day. Our Affective Lessons this year are about GOAL SETTING. I really want them to not just live for the day but look into the future as well. They need to start now making chooses that will help them in the long run. Their work habits and growth mindset will help them accomplish any goal they set before themselves. Today we started our Bridge Unit. The students started researching info about Bridges and working at their Bridges Vocabulary Book. They will complete 3 vocabulary words a week. This will be due in 8 weeks. They will work on this at home mainly but will been given time in class if possible. We have a lot to cover this semester. We also started a new novel study-Bridge to Terabithia. Today I had them list 10 traits they look for in a "GOOD FRIEND." I loved hearing their thoughts. We also did a STEM activity today. The kids mad flying machines with limited supplies. I posted pictures on Class Dojo. I saw some great collaboration and communication. It is not always easy to work with others but I am very proud of how they just came right in and pick up as if no time had passed. We will be doing a lot of group work this year!! ***If you have not gotten sign up on Class Dojo please let me know and I will send home info next week.
