10/28/18 Great Monday!!! We had fun doing a STEM activity today. The kids were given marshmallows and toothpicks to build the tallest FREE STANDING structure. I posted pictures on Class Dojo--Check them out!! After they built the tallest they used the same supplies to build the strongest. I was very impressed with their planning and they did an amazing job using their evaluative thinking skills. For our affective lesson--we read the book Ella Sarah Gets Dressed. We then analyzed the emotions that the book showed and talked about a time when the kids wanted to so something on their own. They drew a picture and then explained how they felt by picking specific colors to show their emotions. The kiddos are still working on their research of Amelia Earhart and another famous women (Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, or Susan B. Anthony). We will be wrapping this up by doing a body biography to compare and contrast these heroic women. We also started construction on our cardboard box airplane. They started to paint last week and hopefully we will have our planes built by Thanksgiving break. The kids are really coming together and I am excited to see them collaborate and communicate with each other week after week.
Homework this week: Logic Puzzle
Have a great week and see you next Monday- Mrs. K :) Happy Halloween!!!!
10/7/19 Great day!!! The kids worked really hard and I am very proud of all their effort. We started our day with some Brainteasers and then did a divergent (creativity) activity that required the kiddos to listen very carefully to the step by step instructions. We then made sure we had all of our research ready to begin our in class project-Body Biography. The students will be showing how Amelia Earhart and with Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, or Susan B Anthony are similar and how they are different. This is an activity that will take us several weeks to complete. I am looking forward to seeing what they come up with. For algebraic thinking today, we did a few math puzzles using clues to determine the answer. We also played with place value today using Versa Tiles. This was a challenge for them but we will continue working on that through out the next few weeks. If you would like to see this activity it is begin tab 7 in their Target notebook. We discussed adjectives as well and listed out all of the adjectives we could think of to show how Amelia Earhart must have felt flying her plane for the very first time. We talked about different "first" that we each had experienced and how anytime we do something for the first time we can have many feeling. Target is new and we discussed how we can deal with our feeling in a positive way and use them to help us grow as individuals. Lastly, we began to design our cardboard box airplanes. This is another in class project. The students will begin to build their plane next week. I am looking forward to seeing their creativity and the use of their evaluative thinking. Homework: Finish TIC TAC TOE project--this came home last week. It is due 10/14/19
I will be popping into as many conferences I can next week. If you have any questions for me please do not hesitate to email email@example.com.
Thanks and have a great week. See you next Monday!! Mrs. K ;)
9/30/19 Welcome Back!! I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break!! :) Today was a great day. The students started the day working on their convergent thinking by solving a logic puzzle. They also worked on their divergent thinking by designing a Spicycle (a bicycle for a spider). We then continue to work on our Unit Study--Amelia Earhart. The students have been researching other famous women and we will start next week to begin a class project that compares and contrast Amelia Earhart and one of the other famous women we have studied. We finish discussing Amelia today and added more information to our map and timeline. HOMEWORK: The students have an AT HOME project that will need to be completed and returned on 10/14/19. Look behind TAB 5 to find the info for the TIC TAC TOE HOME PROJECT. We discussed Amelia's car, The Yellow Peril, today. We talked about how important the car was to her and why she possibly named the car the way she did--what does the name represent? After our discussion the students created their own FAMILY CAR, named it, and had to explain what the name represents. The kid did an amazing job!! We did not get a chance to start our STEM activity--Building a Cardboard Airplane due to the FUNdrasier Kick Off but we did play a few games to work on our evaluative thinking. The students are working so well together and I am looking forward to the next few weeks. They are going to be busy but I know they will step up and do amazing work. Have a great week and see you next Monday!!
Thanks Mrs. K :)
9/16/19 Dear Target Families: Today was a busy day but the kiddos did an amazing job!!! I am enjoying getting to know each of them! They are GREAT kiddos!!! We started the day doing an activity to work on our divergent thinking (Creativity)-Switch a Pic. The kids were given 5 minutes to begin a picture and then they had to switch their pic with another student. Each student then had to finish the other picture and give it a title. We are also continuing to use our convergent thinking by working through the clues to solve logic puzzles. During the Unit Study, we read another chapter about Amelia Earhart, added more information to out Amelia Earhart timeline, and locations on the map. To wrap up the Unit Study lesson for the day, we did a STEM activity. The students were given three types of paper to build paper airplanes. They had to determine which paper would allow their plan to fly the furthest. The kids had fun throwing their airplanes around the room and collecting the data to determine the paper winner. We then watched a video on the requirements needed for a person to become a pilot. The kiddos then wrote about what they wanted to be when they grow up and had to explain what they think is required for them to reach that goal. Finally, we continued our study of famous women by looking at Harriet Tubman. The students are gathering information to complete an in class project comparing Amelia Earhart to other famous women.
Homework this week: Front and Back of the cognitive thinking sheet behind tab 4.
We have fall break next week but will see everyone on 9/30/19. Have a great break!!!
Thanks Mrs. K :)
8/19/19 Dear Target Families- The students came in today prepared and ready to work--I LOVED IT!!! We started our day Doodlin. This is a great time for the kids to allow their creativity to shine. We then did a logic puzzle. These are two activities we will do every week. They help the kids to use their convergent and divergent thinking. We continued our discussion on Amelia Earhart. We read another chapter in our book about her becoming a nurse's aide during WW I. We added information to our timeline and put Toronto, Canada since that is where Amelia lived while she was a nurse's aide. We also talked about maps today and specifically discussed map scales. The kids did great figuring out the distance between several locations in America. After looking at Amelia, we looked into another women who has had several accomplishments. We researched Susan B. Anthony. The kids will be researching other famous women such as Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks in the next several weeks. They will be looking at how these ladies are similar and different while all along looking at how they relate to Amelia Earhart.
The kids have a few things for homework this week. 1. Logic Puzzle 2. Robo writing activity 3. Mystery Box--Students need to bring in 4 items at least that show something special about them. They have a graphic organizer in their binder to help them.
These assignments are due 9/9/19. We will not have Target 8/26. I will be at a training for the day. Also we will not have Target 9/2/19 due to Labor Day. Students will return to Target on 9/9/19.
Hope everyone enjoys their week and see you in September!!
Thanks Mrs. K
8/12/19 Dear Target Families- GREAT FIRST DAY! We did many activities today. We used our Divergent Thinking (Creativity) to finish a picture and design play clothes. Their play clothes are not your every day clothes. I loved their thinking!!! We also did some group work to discuss our communication skills and how we will collaborate in our target classroom. They worked very well together building the TALLEST tower with cups. They used their convergent thinking (problem solving) and evaluative thinking. We also started looking at logic puzzles today. This was something new for the kids but they did an amazing job. They asked questions and seem excited to try another one next week! Today we started our unit on Amelia Earhart. We discussed where she was born and plotted it on a map. Then we started a timeline to add to as we learn more about her.
The students set up their Target binder today and they DO have homework. Homework will be due next Monday. (I told them to try the activities but I don't want them to stress out if something is too difficult for them.) REMEMBER--send Target binder every Monday.
There is info for you to fill out in their binder today--Class Info Sheet. Also there is the info about Class Dojo and how you can sign up.
NOTICE: I decided to send the kids to lunch with their class--so their lunch time is the same all week.
Looking forward to an AWESOME year!!! Have a great week and please email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) or send a Class Dojo message if you have any questions.
